    What is a double coat?

What is a double coat? under coat? second coat?

Breeds are said to be single or double coated. I understand the concept, but how do you know if a dog has a second coat?

Dogs get winter coats, does that include single and double coated breeds? Does a winter coat shedding out appear like a second coat?

If you brush a double coated dog, I assume you always brush out two different types of hair. And if you brush a single coated dog, you get one type of hair. If you brush a single coated dog in the spring when the winter coat is shedding out, do you get two different types of hair only during that time?

    Educate me! Thanks.

Double-coated: Having a thick, warm, short undercoat (or down) that is usually dense enough to resist penetration by water and a stronger, rougher weather-resistant outer coat (topcoat), also referred to as guard hairs. Most other coat types are also double-coated.

Single coated breeds don't shed out in the spring, because they don't have an undercoat to shed out.

Yes, double coated dogs usually shed twice a year, heavily.
Mine are starting to shed......not pretty.

Ah, so any dog with two types of hair has a double coat. Is the double coat always present? Or could you have a winter-only double coat?

During the summer you will not find the thick "Down Hair" , as gsdnewbie described, providing the dog has had proper grooming.

This calls for another photo comparison.

Shepherd/Husky's double-coated dog after what looks like, what, one or two brush strokes?

Okay, I really did laugh out loud!

So the grey fluffy stuff that gets brushed out with the smooth black hairs of my two is definitely an undercoat. I never get any grey fluffy hair out of Ike except right now. Lex seems to always have it, but as mentioned, maybe I'm being lax on the brushing. It should all come out? I just thought she always had the grey fluffy hair.

My Pom's undercoat doesn't all come out in summer, but it does get less dense. I just keep her brushed good year round.
