When I left my husband, he kept Duke, who was an abused, starved Black lab. Sweet as could be once he learned to trust. My husband and I love our dogs. They are our kids. It bothered him horribly that I took Greta and Jack, but at least he had Duke, right? Well, Duke ran away over the 4th of July while my husband was up north in WI (about 3 hours away) visiting his family. He locked Duke in his brother's shed and left. And for some reason never thought to put his collar with tags back on him. Why they were off in the first place I will never understand. Well, in the short period if time that we had Duke we found out that he was gun shy. Really bad. So my idiotic husband thinks nothing of locking him up in an unsecured shed during the 4th of July when fireworks are going off all around. Oh, and mind you, my husband doesn't think that I need to know any of this. My neighbor told me. But she thought that I already knew. My husband told my neighbor that he didn't even try to look for Duke since he didn't know how long he had been gone, what direction he went, how far away he might of been and it was dark. Wow. That breaks my heart into two. That dog deserves better than that. Like I said, I that dog was abused badly. He finally found a happy home that he fit in well with. No one was going to beat him, he was always going to be fed and had a very warm bed to sleep in.

As soon as I found out (yesterday) I called the sherrif's department, the city police department, a couple of rescues that aren't really near by, and I have a couple of numbers for a couple of vet clinics. There is no humane society or shelter of any kind up there. I hope for the best for my poor Duke. Hopefully he found enough trust in this scared little body to find a friend to help him. Sad to say, but he is not your happy go lucky lab, and would probably growl and snap at someone he doesn't know especially when he is running scared.

Fingers crossed that somebody may find him and love him as much as I did.

I hate men

Well, I hope someone find Jack - Calls you - and he can live with you too.

I still have Jack, it is Duke that is gone. If anyone calls me about that dog, I will leave instantly to pick him up and I will not even let my husband know. I don't mind having three, I would love it. Not sure about my landlord though. Just going to wait and see.

Sorry… must be genetic. My mother used to mix up me and my sister’s names all the time. Well, I hope DUKE gets found but it’s already been 4 days. Is there a dump or anything close by where he could be hiding?

It is a heavily wooded area. It is a big tourist town now. There are acres and acres of national and state forests but there are also a lot of people around. It would just depend on which way he might of went. I might end up going up there this weekend to put signs up. I just don't want my in laws to know that I am looking for him. My husband doesn't even know that I know he is gone. I have notified the two lab rescues that I know of in this area but I think that is a far reach. But I will do whatever I can to try to find him. I don't think that I am going to be successful, but I am going to do everything in my power to try to find him. That is about all I can do.

Thank got he never got Greta or Jack, keep them locked away from this twit. To think you felt sorry for him that he had no dogs before and now he has Duke at least for company.
I would never go away and leave mine locked in a shed, or even the house, one night maybe, but then I would be chewing at the bit to get home to them. Hope you find Duke, at least you have a heart.
Prayers and thoughts to you Gretajack.

Thank you much. I have an ad running with the radio station up there but i hate to say that I am hopeless. I have emailed every humane society that I can find between here and there. So sad. I am sure my husband will just go out and get a puppy for his son. That would be just like him. I know that he is probably sad about this but still really just doesn't care. What bothers me the most is that when I get a dog, I make a committment to take care of it for the rest of its life. I do not sell or give away dogs. I have had high $ offers for both Greta and Jack, but it would be like selling your children. How can you give up on a dog that you gave a second chance to? I know I can't.

Funny you should say that, I have had offers for my dog Ellie, I wouldn't give her to anyone for a million bucks. Yes they are exactly like children, but different too, kids grow up and change, move away, dogs grow, but don't change, they need you for as long as they live.
I can just imagine Greta and Jack at the moment, all snuggled up on your couch, living the good life, Ellie is asleep on her chair beside me, asleep AGAIN!!Hubby keeps saying I work her too hard. LOL. She went out twice yesterday to do business. Really hard life Huh!!

Sorry you have to go through this. I surely hope you find that poor dog. Why didn't God give men good common sense?
OOPS! I take that back. My husband is very good with our dog.

Hi...so sorry about your doggies. Sincerely. I hate fireworks. I can understand why people do use and enjoy them...but if they would stop and think that they scare the animals and many leave home, get lost and are never found...maybe they would realize what harm they do. I hope this isn't the case. Stranger things have happened. If he comes back, I would fight tooth and nail to get Duke as your dog. If there's a problem, get him a nice doggie at the pound. That should keep him busy. Does your husband know about heartworm prevention to keep them from catching fatal heartworms if untreated. And Frontline to keep fleas and ticks off. I guess it depends on where you live. I live in the south, but Interceptor (heartworm prevention) is great for heartworm. DON'T give heartworm prevention meds before you check to see if they have them. If and when Duke comes back, he will definitely need to go for a heartworm check. Giving prevention before dog is tested may backfare and it will kill them.
Mine are on both preventatives and I have no fleas or ticks and we lived in a wooded area. There is a shot now for heartworm prevention. It lasts up to 6 months. I assume you have posted signs til you're blue in the face. Go out and look for him on garbage pick up days. Dogs will come from anywhere to see if they can get something or to at least bark at the intruders. Does he have tags on? Do you still think your husband loves your dogs? If he finds him, please ask for sole custody with personal supervision tagging along. He'll get tired of that and then maybe leave you alone. Good luck!

Duke is on heartworm preventative. I had him tested in May. I know my husband kept him on the Heartguard since I took all that was at the house when I left. I told him to go to the vet and get his own. And he did since he left the unused heartguard at my neighbor's house for greta and Jack.

Duke has no tags on and I can't understand why. If I take my dogs away from home i practically glue their collars to them. If they get away it is the only thing to save them.

My husband loves our dogs. This is totally out of character for him.

He will not fight me for Greta and Jack. I told him I get the dogs, he gets the house. Fight me for the dogs, I will fight you for the house and your pension and your 401K and your IRAs. My dogs are worth that much to me. I rather have nothing and have my dogs than to have it all and be alone.

I'm sorry to hear bout Duke. I do hope someone finds him soon and dont take a shot at him like most of them would do down here. Where in WI does he live, i know a couple people up there around the Milwakee area. does Duke have any distinguishing marks? i wish you the best of luck for a safe return for duke.

Carrie--Duke is lost about 5 hours north of Milwaukee. But he could be anywhere since Minocqua is a busy tourist town. Most people that go up there are from Milwaukee or Chicago area. He is all black with bad hips.

Duke is the closest to the camera

Cute "lil" babies you have there Greta. I hate to hear that you are going through this. I wish you all the luck finding Duke.

Guess I'm pretty lucky, when I asked mine to leave (2 1/2 weeks ago) all he took was his clothes.

I have heard nothing on Duke. Not much I can do but sit and wait. Or hope that he found someone to love him dearly. I went to the humane society yesterday to turn in my volunteer application. And of course I had to look at the dogs. And of course there is one that I want so bad. His name is Luke. Strange, in my opinion. 7 year black lab male that is very affectionate. But I don't need another right now. Plus Jack still isn't neutered so they won't let me adopt anyway. I can't wait til his manhood is gone. Oh will my husband be mad when he finds out I neutered his stud dog. [Smile]
